Elaina Simpson

Minneapolis College

Bio

My name is Elaina Simpson and I’ve been a student at Minneapolis College since Spring of 2020. The things that I am most passionate about include advocating for more access to mental health support on our campuses, striving for more sustainable environmental practices, and working towards meeting the basic needs of all our students on campus. I believe my three biggest values include respect and compassion for all that cross path in life, as well as being able to show humility as an individual. I believe that mistakes are not something to be ashamed of, because it shows others that you are human. It’s truly amazing when you can learn from those mistakes and become a better version of your past self.

What degree or certificate program are you seeking?

I’ve earned an AA in liberal arts and an AS in environmental science. This semester I will be receiving a certificate in herbal studies! I will be returning to Minneapolis College next school year (2023-24) to continue my path in earning an AAS in education.

Please describe your previous student government or professional experience, and how it has prepared you for this position.

I am currently the student senate vice president for Minneapolis College. I’ve also have the honor and privilege to attend all of the LeadMN events offered this school year. The advocacy work that we’ve done together has made me realize that there are goals and initiatives that are much bigger than myself. I would like to use my experience and voice to continue advocating for those who need it the most.

Why are you running for this position?

I am running for this position because I believe that my willingness to put others before myself will allow me to give a unique perspective for legislators and representatives. I believe I have a strong understanding in how to be an effective student advocate.

What challenges do you see facing Minnesota's community and technical college students?

Basic needs. This includes mental health support, food, housing, child care access and so much more! A student cannot be their very best in the classroom if they are struggling with accessing the basic needs that they deserve.
