Who we are:

LeadMN – college students connecting for change – represents Minnesota’s 100,000+ two-year community and technical college students. Our mission is to break down barriers by empowering two-year college students to become strong leaders, engaged community members, and successful professionals.

SUPPORTING STUDENT ADVOCACY:

Are you passionate about empowering students to engage in diversity, equity, and inclusion to become effective advocates for the issues affecting them? Do you enjoy connecting organizations and individuals to work on issues impacting students? Do you want to be part of equity and advocacy efforts around racial and social justice issues? 

LeadMN is looking for a student or entry-level professional to assist us in our equity efforts. The Equity Intern will focus on building partnerships with other nonprofits, improving our internal equity practices and policies, and helping to communicate and advance LeadMN advocacy efforts. This position will support the work of LeadMN's Equity and Inclusion and Advocacy Team.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This internship is designed for individuals that are interested in learning more about how to create positive change through advocacy and policy work. It requires the ability to work independently and the motivation to try new tactics. The position consists of hands-on experience and will provide opportunities to:

  1. Research state and federal higher education policy
  2. Build partnerships and organize meetings with student leaders and partner organizations
  3. Create website and social media advocacy content
  4. Interview students and collect stories to support advocacy efforts
  5. Lead meetings for our campaign work
  6. Recruit students to be a part of our core equity teams and groups

General Requirements:

  1. Be able to quickly solve any issues that may arise through effective problem-solving skills
  2. Highly organized and responsible self-starter with the ability to identify new opportunities, while effectively utilizing existing resources
  3. Strong interest in government, politics, advocacy work, and policy research
  4. Effective communicator with strong writing skills, that values open communication and values the importance of active listening
  5. Proven ability to work as part of a team in diverse environments and to handle a variety of situations
  6. Values self-improvement; able to accept praise and critical feedback and seeks evaluation
  7. Inspires other colleagues, volunteers, and community members to find solutions and do quality advocacy work
  8. Experience working in a multi-cultural environment where commitment to diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, and physical ability is an important institutional value

EDUCATION:

Must be a student in a two-year college or graduate transitioning into a career or with an interest in policy, organizing, and advocacy work.

Work Schedule/Time Commitment:

Average weekly hours will vary from 10 – 20 hours Monday - Friday between 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. 

Compensation: $16.00 per hour.

Start Date: June 2022

Internship duration: June 2022 - May 2023
