Each semester students get multiple syllabi for their courses that they will read through. By including a basic needs statement in their syllabi, faculty can help spread the word about basic needs resources, regularly reinforce that support is available to students, and build a culture of caring.

Sample Basic Needs Statement
Any students dealing with outside circumstances that they believe will affect their performance in the course (e.g. who have difficulty affording groceries or accessing sufficient food to eat every day, or who lack a safe and stable place to live, who are experiencing mental health issues, or who have experienced a sexual assault) are urged to contact the Dean of Students for support, or the Counseling and Health Center on either campus. Furthermore, please notify me if you are comfortable doing so. This will enable me to provide any resources I may possess.

Oregon State University Basic Needs Statement
Any student who has difficulty affording groceries or accessing sufficient food to eat every day, or who lacks a safe and stable place to live, and believes this may affect their performance in the course, is urged to contact the Human Services Resource Center (HSRC) for support (hsrc@oregonstate.edu, 541-737-3747). The HSRC has a food pantryassistance signing up for SNAP (up to $194 in grocery money each month for eligible students), textbook lending program and other resources to help. Furthermore, please notify the professor if you are comfortable in doing so. This will enable them to provide any resources that they may possess.
