10 ways you can shake the funk of the latest snowfall

Is the never-ending winter getting you down? It feels like we have had snow for the past 6 months, and some of Minnesota has (the first snow fall was in late October). So if you are just done with winter, here are ten fun activities you can do to beat away the winter blues and get ready for summer!

1. Move your body

Exercising is a great way to keep your body moving. It increases your brains level of serotonin (serotonin regulates your mood, appetite and your sleep-wake cycle) and it also increases amino acids that make MORE serotonin. If you want more light in your life, take a brisk walk outside during the day to soak in the sunrays and keep your body moving! [1]

2. Eat chocolate

Eating small amounts of dark chocolate can release serotonin and make you feel more awake. The effect will only last 1-2 hours so keep a few pieces on hand when you are in a pinch. [1]

3. Plan a stay-cation

Dreaming about the beach but can’t afford the airfare? There are so many things to do in the great state of Minnesota, so pick the one thing you have always wanted to do and do it!

4. Socialize

Meet up with a friend that you haven’t talked to in 5 years. Attend or host a dinner party. Get out and talk with others (even if it is only for an hour), you will instantly feel better for talking to someone besides your dog.

5. Cook a new meal

Try something more challenging that will put your skills to the test! Plus, what is a better way to be social than to invite friends and family over to enjoy it with you? [2]

6. Binge watch your latest obsession

I’m not recommending that you binge watch TV all-day, everyday, but every now and then catching up on the latest craze is the best way to keep yourself entertained. [2]

7. Get a new hobby

Have you always wanted to try photography? How about knitting? Now is your time to learn that thing you have always wanted to try. (I recommend playing cribbage because it is the best way to be entertained and social, a two-for-one!) [2]

8. Find ways to be grateful

Volunteer or write thank you letters. Thinking of all the things that you are grateful for will brighten your mood and help create feelings of fulfillment.

9. Start a project

Want to paint a room? How about re-organize your closet? Start (and finish) that project you have been putting off all winter. [2]

10. Get outside!

This is Minnesota! There is plenty to do and see outdoors, so dress for the weather and explore our great state!

If you are feeling down by this springtime winter, try one of these many options and remember, summer (and sweating) is right around the corner!
