On Tuesday, February 5, the Minnesota House of Representatives adopted deadlines for committees to process legislation by. Set in the House Rules and Legislative Administration Committee, the deadlines are as follows:

  • First deadline: Friday, March 15
  • Second deadline: Friday, March 29
  • Third deadline: Friday, April 12

With thousands of bills introduced each session, committee deadlines whittle the number down to a manageable size. Each deadline forces the House and Senate to act on or dispense with bills before their committees. Bills that don’t make it past deadline are shelved.

  • First deadline: Committees in the body of origin must act favorably on the bill
  • Second deadline: Committees in the other body must act favorably on bills that made it through first deadline
  • Third deadline: Committees must act favorably on major appropriation and finance bills

While deadlines help manage legislation, there are several committees for which deadlines do not imply; they include House Capital Investment Division, Taxes, Ways & Means, and Rules & Legislative Administration committees, and Senate Capital Investment, Finance, Taxes, and Rules & Administration committees.
