Students in Minnesota work hard, in fact it takes us on average 34 hours a week of minimum wage work to cover the cost of tuition Minnesota’s community and technical colleges. However, progress has been made towards making college more affordable in Minnesota. While the rest of the country saw tuition and fees increase, students in Minnesota have benefitted from flat tuition for the last 6 years.

This victory wasn’t handed to students; you fought for it with hours of sharing your stories with legislators at the Minnesota capitol. But the fight for affordable college must continue.

This November, Minnesota will elect a new governor, and this person will set the tone for what issues will be a priority for the state. Despite your hard work, college is still not affordable for far too many students. Minnesota still has the 5th highest tuition and fees in the country for community and technical colleges. By participating in local party caucuses on February 6, students showed the next governor that supporting affordable tuition for community and technical colleges is important.
