On behalf of our students I want to thank the chairs, legislative leaders and the governor for making a bold investment in public higher education. For decades, Minnesota’s budget has been balanced on the backs of students with budget cuts and subsequent increases in tuition and fees. In fact tuition has almost tripled in the last 20 years, far outpacing inflation.

LeadMN sent a letter to the six legislators on the Omnibus Higher Education Conference Committee urging them to "to keep them at the center of your decisions as you move forward in the final weeks of session. As the future welders, electricians, farmers, nurses, police officers, mechanics, and counselors, they are the backbone of our state economy, our local communities, and the success of our state."

Join us on Wednesday, May 3 at 2 pm to hear the first meeting of the conference committee as they discuss how best to make college affordable. We want to show members how students support the free college proposal. The meeting will be held in room G3 of the state capitol.

According to data released by the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, Minnesota had the third highest youth voter (ages 19-29) turnout in the country for the 2022 election.

LeadMN joined 37 other organizations urging Congress to make investments in key student support programs that will help students complete college.

The week the Minnesota House and Senate higher education committees have both released and approved their committee’s omnibus bill. The committee has to work with a budget increase of $650 million, of which $450 million is ongoing in the base.

LeadMN shared this feedback regarding the student fee process and plan to raise student fees by $242 per student per year. Students can not afford such a massive hike in student fees.

The US Department of Education released a memo today outlining ways that higher education institutions can support students that may be experiencing the hunger cliff.  With the end of the public health emergency, Minnesota higher education institutions can play a critical role in helping students get the resources they need.
